FEATURE: Amie Breeze Harper, PhD

Amie Breeze Harper, PhD, the creator of The Sistah Vegan Project and the editor of the ground-breaking anthology, Sistah Vegan: Black Female Vegans Speak on Food, Identity, Health, and Society, is a sought-after speaker, writer, researcher and consultant at Critical Diversity Solutions. Her most recently published book Scars: A Lesbian Experience in Rural White New England (Sense Publishers 2014) interrogates how systems of oppression and power impact the life of protagonist 18 year old Savannah Sales, the only Black teenager living in an all white and working class rural New England town. In 2016, her latest book will be published, titled Recipes for Racial Tension Headaches: A Critical Race Feminist's Journey Through 'Post-Racial' USA's Ethical Foodscape.

Overall, Dr. Harper's work focuses on how systems of oppression-namely racist and normative whiteness-operate within the USA. She uses food culture within North America to explore these systems, using critical whiteness studies, decolonial theory, critical race feminism, critical animal studies, and critical food studies.

Dr. Harper has been invited to deliver keynote addresses and lectures at universities and conferences throughout North America. Her talks explore how and why people have unique relationships to food and wellness and how these relationships are impacted by race, socio-economic class, gender, sexuality, and physical abilities.

FEATURE: Bria Bea

My name is Bria Bea and I am a youtuber and a black vegan! I went vegan two years ago (December 24th, 2013...really chose to shake up the holidays for my family) simply because I learned so much about animal agriculture and realized that I couldn't justify the consumption of animal products anymore. So, I went vegan and since then I've started a youtube channel where I post content about social issues and most recently, I make food videos!

If you have other ideas for food, discussion topics surrounding veganism (or anything else really), and more, please let me know. Subscribe to my youtube channel and chat with me on other social media pages (instagram, twitter, facebook) at @heybriabea. I'm building community with people who remind me of me, so vegans, lgbtq+ folks, black folks, come one and all!

FEATURE: Unique Vance

My name is Unique Vance and I am a 3rd year Global Studies major at UC Santa Barbara where I am the Co-Chair of my university's Student Commission on Racial Equality and the former Environmental Justice chair of my university's Environmental Affairs Board. I grew up in Compton, California, and became vegetarian in high school after my best friend and I started an environmental club called "The Green Team".

When I learned about the link between social justice issues and the animal agriculture industry I couldn't come up with a good excuse to continue eating meat. After watching Cowspiracy in college I knew that I had to make the decision to completely eliminate animal products from my diet due to the ethical and environmental impacts of the dairy industry.

As an environmental justice advocate, racial justice has always been at the forefront of my politics. Racial justice is something that I have seen missing from mainstream veganism. Because of this Vegan Voices of Color was started by myself and my best friend Aaron just over a month ago. We wanted to link the causes and goals of veganism with the intersection of issues faced by people of color, from climate change to vegan eating on a low income diet.  I am currently trying to bridge social justice with veganism, allowing people to see how mainstream white veganism shouldn't be the face of this social justice crisis.

I hope to advocate for a veganism that centers around the intersections of being a person of color. Veganism is a social cause and I hope to show this through Vegan Voices of Color. My motto is vegan for the animals/ vegan for the people/ vegan for the planet/ vegan for justice!
